Ever heard of Dr. Otto H. Warburg? Unless you or your family member has suffered from cancer and tried to cure it naturally, his name and research probably won’t ring a bell.
Dr. Warburg is a Nobel prize winner best known for his work on the process of oxidation and the metabolism of tumors. According to the Nobel Prize Committee, “he has shown, among other things, that cancerous cells can live and develop, even in the absence of oxygen”.
As you know, oxygen is essential for all life to thrive and survive. The fact that cancerous cells can thrive without it is perplexing, so here’s a little breakdown on how it works.
Dr. Warburg discovered that “tumor cells obtain the energy required for their existence in two ways: by respiration [a process that requires oxygen] and by fermentation [an anaerobic process]. In respiration they burn organic materials to carbon dioxide and water; in fermentation they split glucose to lactic acid.”
Both carbon dioxide and lactic acid are acidic, meaning that cancer cells essentially thrive in an acidic environment.
When tumors occur in oxygen-deprived environments, a protein called CHCHD4 triggers the release of HIF (hypoxia-inducible factor), a dimeric protein complex that encourages blood vessel formation around the tumor as well as tumor migration.
This allows the tumor to continue to grow and spread throughout the body.
Aggressive diseases like pancreatic cancers and gliomas (a form of brain tumor) contain higher levels of CHCHD4 than other cancers.
“Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation. All normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes.” Explained the Nobel Laureate.
Most parents appreciate it when their parents help care for their grandkids – it gives them some free time and it saves them the hassle of hiring a babysitter. A lot of grandparents also love taking care of their grandkids which is why it’s usually a win-win situation. If that isn’t enticing enough, there is also a scientific reason why seniors should babysit their grandkids.
A recent peer-reviewed study by the Journal Evolution and Human Behavior in Berlin determined that grandparents who babysit their grandchildren tend to live significantly longer than those who don’t. The study was done with over 500 people of 70+ years of age and it reached some very definitive conclusions.
Seniors who helped care for their grandkids had a whopping 37% lower mortality risk than adults of the same age who have no “caring responsibilities.”
Why Grandparents Who Babysit Live Longer While science can’t with 100% accuracy explain why grandparents that babysit live longer, they do have a pretty good idea.
The researchers believe that caregiving brings purpose to seniors and makes them more active and driven, which is vital at their age. One of the authors of the study, Sonja Hilbrand, a doctoral student in the department of psychology at the University of Basel, Switzerland, noted that:
“This link could be a mechanism deeply rooted in our evolutionary past when help with childcare was crucial for the survival of the human species.”
The study involved medical tests and period interviews with the participants every two years between 1990 and 2009. It should be noted that the study was only focused on periodic babysitters and caregivers and not people who were looking after their grandchildren full-time.
Another researcher, Bruno Arpino, an associate professor at the Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, said that:
“Caregiving may give caregivers a purpose in life because caregivers may feel useful for the others and for the society. Caregiving may be thought also as an activity that (keeps) caregivers physically and mentally active.”
Water retention is an accumulation of excess fluid in the body, making your hands, feet, legs, and ankles swollen. This uncomfortable condition is also known as edema. The reasons why it happens are not usually serious, but there are severe cases when it can indicate heart failure or kidney disease.
The most common causes of edema are high or low blood pressure, sitting or standing for too long, hormone imbalance, high sodium intake, prescription medications, pregnancy, infection of blood vessels, etc.
Having excess fluid in your body can make you weight more than you really are. So, by getting rid of the excess fluid you’ll also get leaner.
Luckily, you can reduce water retention by consuming potassium-rich foods with great diuretic properties.
Here are the best foods for reducing water retention.
Top 10 Foods for Water Retention
A lot of people suffer from edema due to a diet low in potassium and high in sodium. So, the potassium-rich dandelion is an excellent choice for these people. Sodium makes your body tissues retain water, but, potassium stimulates the release of excess fluid.
The best way to use the diuretic properties of dandelion is in form of tea, as well as concentrated dandelion supplements. Brew a cup of dandelion tea and drink it every day to urinate more often, thus eliminating the excess fluid from your body.
Parsley tea is another great natural remedy for water retention. According to animal research, parsley has excellent diuretic properties which makes you urinate more often.
Even though more studies are needed to prove its diuretic potential in people, a lot of people praise this herb for its ability to reduce edema.
This herb is one of the most popular natural diuretics used for hundreds of years. Asparagus helps treat water retention related to rheumatism and menstrual cycle thanks to the asparagine – amino acid in its content.
Once consumed, asparagus is broken down into sulfur compounds which makes your pee smell odd. These compounds cause frequent urination and help cleanse your body of toxins.
4. Caraway Seeds
The most common medicinal uses of caraway are treating digestive problems and edema. Rat studies showed that caraway increases the amount of urine.
However, the quantity of caraway for reducing edema in humans is not known due to lack of human studies.
Still, you can start using them as a spice to different meals, as well as prepare them as tea. Just don’t forget to have the tea along with the seeds.
This herb is a great natural diuretic available as a supplement and in the form of tea. According to one research, the effect of horsetail supplements are almost equal as those of commercial diuretics.
However, long use of these supplements can cause certain side effects. Also, avoid them if you have diabetes or kidney disease.
6. Black and Green Tea
Black and green tea offer excellent diuretic properties. But, when consuming the tea, make sure you have it without sugar or milk. This is because white sugar and dairy can worsen edema. An interesting fact about black and green tea is that they are most effective for treating edema when not consumed every day.
In contrast, drinking them on a regular basis might make you develop tolerance for their diuretic properties. Therefore, drink them occasionally, on days when you feel extra swollen.
This vegetable has high water content, so eating it will make you urinate more often. What’s more, cucumbers contain silicon and sulfur which can improve your kidney function and eliminate excess uric acid from them.
Moreover, they are rich in potassium which helps your body flush out excess water. Cucumbers can reduce symptoms of edema like swelling even when used topically. For example, you can place cool cucumber slices over your puffy eyes to reduce the swelling.
8. Bamboo Shoots
Bamboo shoots are inexpensive and versatile ingredient that add a flavor and texture to your food. According to one research, they are high in potassium, so they help reduce sodium levels and increase the production of urine.
Celery has a high-water content and a fair amount of fiber and potassium.
In fact, its unique sodium to potassium balance makes celery an effective natural diuretic, excellent for treating water retention.
Bananas are rich in potassium –a mineral which increases urine production and reduces sodium levels. Moreover, they contain high levels of vitamin B6 which reduces edema related to premenstrual syndrome.
Add more of these foods to your diet to reduce the swelling in your hands, feet, legs, and ankles. If you know any other food or natural remedy for water retention, feel free to share it in the comments.
Whenever we hear the word bedbugs, chills run down our spine, we know they’re a nightmare to get rid of and are simply disgusting. Bedbugs are small parasites that feed on our blood and dead skin cells and are so tiny that cannot be seen with the naked eye. They’re oval, brownish parasites with a flat body that turns red and swells when they’ve fed. Bed bugs are more active at night but are not entirely nocturnal. The female bedbugs can lay thousands of eggs during one lifetime as they reproduce awfully quickly. These eggs are as big as a speck of dust which can easily be brought to your home through used furniture, baggage, used bed, linens, clothing and so on. Bed bugs can cause serious problems as they can cause rashes, allergies and even psychological problems in certain cases.
How to tell if you have bed bugs at home?
The most common symptom people with bed bugs experience is an itching sensation all over their body first thing they get up from bed. The itching place is where the bug has bitten you and sometimes these places become reddish and swollen as a result. There can even be blood stains on your sheets and pillows from the bites.
The bed bugs’ feces are another sign that you’ve got a bed bug infestation. Look for these among your sheets and mattress. They secrete a musty odor from their scent glands, so this is another sign you probably have a problem with bed bugs.

Anxiety is a very common nervous disorder that cause fear, nervousness and panic. Even Hippocrates wrote about anxiety in the fourth century BCE. Soren Kierkegaard mentioned it in the 1860 while Freud in 1926. Nowadays, anxiety is a common problem that affects especially the young population.
Anxiety is usually treated with traditional method of using pharmaceutical drugs. Also, another approach is the cognitive therapy.
Other people tend to treat anxiety with yoga, meditation, massage, some other relaxation methods as well as music. The music turned to be a successful method of treating such disorder. According to the UK neuroscientists, there is even a single song that significantly reduces the overall anxiety by 65%.
Generation Y and Anxiety According to a survey in 2013, nearly 57% of the female university students from America suffered from anxiety. While in the UK, almost a third of young women and one in ten men experienced panic attacks.
Marjorie Wallace, states that the generation Y (1980-1990) belong to the age of desperation. The reasons for such age may be the increased development of technology, overprotective parenting and luxury of having too much choice.
According to the London-based psychologist, Pieter Kruger, people who feel they have no choice in life are stronger because simply they blame life if they make the wrong decision. In case of other people who have many choices, they have no one to blame but themselves. In this case, they become more obsessed because they want to make the right decision every time.
The writer, Claire Eastham in her blog “We Are All Mad Here” states that people spend time worrying about their lives, but if they are told what to do, then the pressure goes away.
Nowadays, such decision making can bring about a type of paralysis. For example, when looking for shoes, you will search the whole day until you feel exhausted and guilty for such a simple task.
Another reason for anxiety is the rapid development of technology. People are obsessed with their smartphones and gadgets so that they become completely disconnected from the environment.
They have a fear known as Fomo (Fear of Missing Out) so that’s why they want to be informed of what is doing on the social media.
Kruger points out that people can get addicted to this fear which can affect the level of anxiety and the overall wellbeing.
The media has allowed people to compare everything from figure, relationship, wealth, not only with the people you know but with other celebrities. This can further make people depressed and hopeless.
The neuroscientists have found that listening to some specially designed song can play a significant role in the levels of anxiety.
The Creation of the Ultimate Anti-Stress Music The scientists from the Mindlab International wanted to find out the type of music that relaxes the people the most. The study included participants that experienced a certain degree of stress. They listened some songs and the scientist measured their blood pressure, brain activity, heart rate and rate of breathing.
One particular song “Weightless” reduced almost 65% of the overall anxiety of the participants and 35% of the physiological resting rate.
This song was specifically designed to promote a highly-relaxed state. This song was created by the Marconi Union and the musicians carefully arranged the rhythms, harmonies and bass lines that slowed the listener’s blood pressure and heart rate as well as cortisol, the stress hormone. Here is the song, so relax and enjoy.
Our kidneys are one of the most important organs in the human body. They perform some very important functions in the human body, so it’s logical that we should take good care of them. Our kidneys filter about 120-150 quarts of blood, to produce 1-2 quarts of urine, filtering waste and extra fluid out of the body. Some of the most important functions that our kidneys perform are: prevent the buildup of waste in the body, keep electrolyte levels stable, and make hormones that regulate blood pressure, make blood cells, and maintain strong bones.
In this article we’re going to present you 8 bad habits that can damage your kidneys and you do them every day! Start avoiding them immediately! Here’s what you need to do to protect your kidneys:
1. Not Emptying Your Bladder Retaining urine in your bladder is a bad idea. If you do it on a regular basis, it can increase the urine pressure in your kidneys and lead to renal failure or incontinence.
2. Not drinking enough water We always need to have properly hydrated kidneys so that they could perform their functions. If we don’t drink enough liquids, the toxins can start accumulating in the blood, because there isn’t enough fluid to drain them through the kidneys. According to the National Kidney Foundation, we should drink at least 12 glasses of water a day. An easy way to see if you’re drinking enough liquids is to check the color of your urine.
3. High Salt Consumption Salt is very important for the body, but try to limit your intake. Over consumption of salt can raise your blood pressure and put too much strain on your kidneys. You shouldn’t eat more than 5.8 grams of salt a day.
4. Regular Use of Analgesics We sometimes take medications too fast, in too big doses and not in the right way. When pain occurs, the easiest thing to do is to just swallow the pill. Think twice. All pharmaceutical drugs come with side effects, and many of them cause damage to the kidneys. But still, there are some drugs that you should be taking.
5. High Protein Diet Protein is good for your health, but the excessive consumption of red meat and other protein-based foods can increase the risk of developing some kidney disease. A study conducted by a group of experts at the Harvard University, has managed to discover that too much protein in your diet can harm the kidneys. The byproduct of protein digestion is ammonia, a toxin your hard-working kidneys need to neutralize. More protein means more effort for your kidneys and that can over time, lead to decreased function.
6. Too much alcohol consumption The toxins found in alcohol damage your liver, but also your kidneys. Kidney Health Australia and American Kidney Fund claim that one way to avoid kidney disease is to drink alcohol in moderation.
7. Consuming too much caffeine We often consume more caffeine than we think we do. It is also present in many soft drinks and sodas, and causes your blood pressure to go up and down, but also your kidneys will suffer.
8. Ignoring Common Infections Try not to ignore common infections. Ignoring these common infections like colds, the flu, coughs, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and others can also cause huge damage to your kidneys. People with kidney disease often have a history of not resting when they are sick. These patients with kidney disease are also more sensitive to weather changes and often get sick.
Resembling a cross between a dandelion and a thistle, wild lettuce has been used as a painkiller and sedative for millennia. In the 1800s, wild lettuce was considered a substitute for opium and was sometimes called “poor man’s opium.” The Hopi Indians smoked the sap to induce a mild euphoric dream state. Even today, in France, water distilled from wild lettuce is used as a mild sedative.
Wild lettuce contains a resinous milky sap, which contains a small amount of pain-relieving opiates. When this substance is collected and dried, it is called lactucarium. The main active compounds of lactucarium are called lactupicrin, lactucin and lactucopicrin, and have been found to have analgesic activity equal or greater to that of ibuprofen in mice. Lactucin and lactucopicrin were also found to have sedative activity in measurements of spontaneous movements of the mice.
Wild Lettuce, Organic 3oz. Researchers in Iran have found that opium lettuce was well known as a painkiller and sedative before the Victorian period. Thus, it is likely that it has been used for eons. In the paper, Lettuce, lactuca sp. as a Medicinal Plant in Polish Publications of the 19th Century, the Institute for the History of Science affirmed, “The action of the substance was weaker than that of opium, but free of the side-effects, and medical practice showed that in some cases lactucarium produced better curative effects than opium”. Despite opium lettuce not containing opium, it has multiple characteristics that are similar to it. In addition to its pain-relieving properties, it is also known for assisting with coughs. It has even been used successfully in the mitigation of whooping cough (pertussis) symptoms.
Opium Lettuce Uses
Anxiety: Wild Lettuce has a mild sedative effect which makes it great for anxiety. Sleep and Insomnia: Wild Lettuce has long been used to treat insomnia.
To relieve Pain and Tension: Wild Lettuce is also called opium lettuce because of its opiate like effect. Not only does it reduce pain, it has been known to cause a mild opiate like high. This quality makes it very useful in relieving pain.
For Migraine / Headaches: Wild Lettuce is believed to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches.
For Asthma Wild Lettuce was originally used as a treatment for asthma. Even now, many people claim that their use of the herb is responsible for fewer and less severe asthma related problems.
As a mild Euphoric One of the most prominent reasons people choose Wild Lettuce is for the opiate like effect. Wild Lettuce causes a feeling of mild euphoria very similar to opiates, though it contains no actual opiates. Not only is this completely legal, it provides an affect similar to opiates without altering the results of a drug test.
Eating large doses of opium lettuce can cause nausea, vomiting, anxiety, and dizziness. So, it is probably best not to use it in a salad.
How to Use Opium Lettuce When a stem or leaf from a wild Lettuce plant is broken or cut, it will bleed a thick milky sap. This sap can be made into an alcohol tincture, (Lactucarium) or the fresh leaves and flowering tops can be tinctured, or dried and made taken as teas, smoked or less often in capsule form. Approximately 1.5 grams of opium lettuce sap is typically infused in a tea. It is alleged to have a sweet taste. Only about 0.25 grams are smoked in a pipe. It is considerably more potent when smoked.
